The Writing Assessment Badge Series: Public Criteria

208 views 5

Summary: NWP awards four successive badges to scorers and leaders at NWP scoring events.

NWP Scoring Conferences are national events organized and facilitated by the National Writing Project where Writing Project teachers come together and train to score student writing to determine measurable outcomes of a program.

Scoring Conferences consist of an extensive formal training program that includes preparing Scorers to apply a consistent set of standards when scoring student writing. Training includes language alignment when discussing writing, calibration activities, and critical conversations that orient participants to the system and rubric.

Participating teachers are recognized through a series of NWP Writing Assessment badges, earned sequentially. The Writing Assessment badges are issued by the National Writing Project to recognize progressive levels of involvement in writing assessment.

    • The Writing Assessment Badge for Scoring recognizes educators who have completed the NWP scorer training and adopted the principles of the NWP scoring system to accurately score student writing.
    • The Writing Assessment Badge for Table Leading recognizes educators who have provided leadership in an NWP scoring event and have facilitated the development and supported the training for Scorers throughout a scoring conference. They have ensured that Scorers stayed calibrated to the NWP scoring system, facilitated re-calibration activities, and discussed student writing with scorers.
    • The Writing Assessment Badge for Room Leading recognizes educators who have designed and led scoring conferences, facilitated the development of Table Leaders and Scorers as they adopted the language and principles of the NWP scoring system, calibrated the group of Scorers and Table Leaders to the NWP scoring system, designed re-calibration activities, and articulated language to discuss student writing with Scorers.
    • The Writing Assessment Badge for Rangefinding recognizes educators who have collaboratively designed the training materials for scoring conferences, including the identification of the collection of exemplar student writing samples that demonstrate the standards of the NWP scoring system. They composed robust written justifications that detail how each exemplar paper demonstrates the standards of the scoring system.
